The beginning!

During 1985, we began providing public transportation with two vans, a 1977 Ford and 1979 Chevy vans that were used to bring elderly persons into the senior center for congregate meals.  The service was named Rockcastle County Public Transit.  Soon, two 15-passenger vans were added, a 1986 Ford van purchased with Section 16(b)2 funding for elderly and persons with disabilities and a 1988 15-passenger Ford van purchased with what was then called Section 18 funds for general public transportation.

A Brief History of RTEC

Rural Transit Enterprises Coordinated, Inc. (RTEC) is a non-profit corporation which was organized in 1989 and began providing community transit services open to the public in rural Southeast Kentucky during July 1990.

Beginning as a single county transit system, RTEC quickly grew to a 12-county transit system and has received several awards from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Office of Transportation Delivery in recognition of its accomplishments.  During 1999, RTEC was among the first agencies in Kentucky to receive an award as broker for the Human Service Transportation Delivery (HSTD) program and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF).

The community transit service is made possible through grant funds for public transportation and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Office of Transportation Delivery.

The revenues needed for matching requirements and other transit operations are generated through various contracts for transportation services.  Operating expenses are reduced through cash fare box.

services include a demand response public transit system, intercity routes, rides for jobs access and reverse commute and new freedom rides for elderly/disabled.

RTEC employs approximately 200 people across the 13-county service area of Kentucky. We are continually looking for talented, motivated men and women who want to join our team. Our common goal is to find the best person for the job.  Application for Employment
