A Brief History of RTEC

Rural Transit Enterprises Coordinated, Inc. (RTEC) is a non-profit corporation which was organized in 1989 and began providing community transit services open to the public in rural Southeast Kentucky during July 1990.

Beginning as a single county transit system, RTEC quickly grew to a 12-county transit system and has received several awards from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Office of Transportation Delivery in recognition of its accomplishments.  By 2008, RTEC's service area covers 18 counties as a broker for the Human Service Transportation Delivery (HSTD) program.

The community transit service is made possible through grant funds for public transportation and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Office of Transportation Delivery.

The revenues needed for matching requirements and other transit operations are generated through various contracts for transportation services.  Operating expenses are reduced through cash fare box.

RTEC is the broker for Human Service Transportation Delivery (HSTD) in Region 12 and six (6) counties of Region 5 of Kentucky.

Services include a demand response public transit system, intercity routes, rides for jobs access and new freedom rides for elderly/disabled.
